Streetcar Safety
Remember to always be aware of your surroundings. Streetcars have slow reaction times, so be sure to obey traffic, wear proper riding gear and safely cross at designated locations. Let’s all get home safely.
Oklahoma City is a streetcar city, so we’ve outlined a list of things you’ll need to know when you’re driving, walking or cycling near streetcars, tracks and the Overhead Contact System (OCS) poles:
- Be ready to stop. Streetcars travel below or at the speed limit and stop often.
- Be aware and listen. Streetcars are very quiet and use bells and horns to tell you they are coming.
- Follow your own traffic signals. Streetcars have their own signals that are not for cars or walkers.
- Cyclists should wear proper riding gear, stay aware of surroundings and obey traffic laws.
- Don’t walk, run or play on the streetcar tracks. Never cross in front of a moving streetcar.
- Wait until traffic has stopped before crossing.
- Always use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing.
- Remove headphones or turn volume down when near a streetcar so you can hear bells or horns.
- If crossing with a wheelchair, skateboard or stroller, keep all wheels on the ground.
- Never touch the streetcar wires, poles or power stations.
- Never touch a downed wire or anything touching it.
