EMBARK Everyday - Seven Day Bus Service Launches

EMBARK, Oklahoma City’s transportation authority, recently started operating on Sundays for the first time in more than 50 years. On January 27, residents began moving around the city on a Sunday by bus. EMBARK and Oklahoma City officials celebrated the launch of the long-awaited seven-day service on the first day of Sunday service at Oklahoma City’s Downtown Transit Center.

“Sixty-seven percent of riders don’t have a working vehicle, and they rely on EMBARK as their primary source of transportation,” said EMBARK director Jason Ferbrache. “We’re committed to providing safe, efficient and convenient public transportation for Oklahoma City residents. Offering seven-day service across 16 routes means our residents have even more mobility options, which for some is opening doors to new opportunities, allowing them to get to work, run essential errands, or take part in more of our community activities.”

EMBARK kicked off seven-day-a-week service with breakfast, live music, and giveaways on the 27th. The celebration continues on the bus on designated Sunday routes through March. EMBARK staff are riding along on select trips handing out giveaways, including seven-day bus passes.

“The strong response from our customers demonstrates the need for 7-day bus service. We promise to keep looking at how to improve our service so we can help our riders enjoy a greater quality of life,” said Ferbrache.

Plans to enhance public transit throughout the Oklahoma City metro area continue. EMBARK just announced plans to offer permanent service on Sundays starting in April for its new streetcar service that operates in the downtown area. Last year, Oklahoma City received a federal grant to develop a bus rapid transit line between downtown and the city’s northwest side, providing residents with more options for their daily commutes. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021 and service could begin in 2023.
